FOREST MEDITATION

At dawn I come, a stranger and a guest,

To this place of no horizon.

First light brings greening to the moss

Shadows play among the blackthorn;

The dance of Robin Goodfellow with the mad axeman.

Under a canopy of leaves

A tree stump serving for a moon mat,

My body merges with the rich dark earth.

I sit in the solid moment of trees

The wind as present as breathing.

Paul Millen
