The Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO) is a world-wide Buddhist movement founded by Sangharakshita in 1967. Sangharakshita is an Englishman, who spent twenty years in India living as a Buddhist. He came into contact, studied and practised with teachers from all the main schools of Buddhism enabling him to develop a broad perspective of Buddhism as a whole. When he returned to the UK in 1967 this perspective enabled him to develop a new approach to Buddhism drawing on both the diversity and the unity of the different schools and teachings. FWBO

As the FWBO has grown and developed it has continued to draw from the Buddhist tradition but also to engage with the modern world to make the teachings more meaningful to people living today. The FWBO is now a rich and varied tradition including Buddhist centres, retreat centres, team based businesses, communities as well as institutions dedicated to exploring the arts from a Buddhist perspective.
